Review: A New Heroine Emerges in 'Batwoman - The Complete Second Season'

JC Alvarez READ TIME: 2 MIN.

What makes a hero? What is it that inspires them to hold the line? In "Batwoman – The Complete Second Season," available now on Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital, a new heroine must emerge from the shadows to defend Gotham City from chaos and corruption. Ryan Wilder (new series lead Javicia Leslie) may not have always been in the right place at the right time, but what the homeless young woman finds amid the wreckage of a crash site will change her life!

The CW hit series took a daring turn for its Second Season, and introduced a new vigilante when the original Batwoman went missing in action. Donning the suit, Wilder exacts her revenge on the criminal element plaguing the streets, and when former allies Luke Fox (Camrus Johnson) and Mary Hamilton (Nicole King) discover that their friend has been replaced, the team is more determined than ever to keep the memory of the Batwoman alive while tackling the mystery of her disappearance.

The sudden departure of former lead actor Ruby Rose at the end of Season 1 left a vacuum that was difficult to fill, especially with Ryan Wilder not entirely a part of the comic book mythology. For the uninitiated, Kate Kane (Ruby Rose) is a first cousin of Bruce Wayne, who we all know is Batman, Gotham City's Dark Knight Detective. Ryan steps into the legacy (and the Bat Cave) when Gotham City finds itself lost without its hero. The emergence of Alice (Rachel Skarsten) also raises the stakes.

Now Ryan is more than ever determined to be that beacon of hope that her city needs. A battle is brewing between the kingpins of crime and the drug suppliers, and all roads lead to the disappearance of Kate Kane. Will Ryan Wilder rise to the occasion, or is she over the head? The exciting Second Season of "Batwoman" is running on all pistons, thanks to Javicia Leslie's star turn and the magnificent work of series regular baddie Rachel Skarsten as Alice.

"Batwoman" is a worthy part of The CW primetime universe of DC characters. Even in the face of the global pandemic the show managed to deliver an action-driven season while introducing some all-new characters that remained enticing, and managing to pull a trick or two out of its hat that gave it a depth all of its own. Get The Complete Second Season just in time to catch-up before the upcoming Season Three action begins, with Leslie returning as Batwoman. This time she'll be joined in her adventures by Luke Fox (Johnson) as the tech-savvy Batwing!

Special Features include:

  • Villains Analyzed
  • Never Alone: Heroes and Allies

  • Gag Reel

"Batwoman" The Complete Second Season is available now on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital Download for $40.99.
