Protesting and facing resistance is something that is embedded in the LGBTQ community. Since the Stonewall Riots in 1969, Black queer people and transgender women of color have risked their lives and been on the frontlines of changing and shaping our world. And since then, the LGBTQ community has fought for equality by launching grassroots groups and leading organizations to help stop discrimination and violence against queer people.

During our current times of unrest, many folks are taking to the streets across the nation to protest police brutality and violence against Black people. And many are opening their wallets to give, especially now as LGBTQ Pride Month begins. If you are able to donate, below are five organizations, many of which aim to help Black queer and trans people.

The Marsha P. Johnson Institute: Named after the activist Marsha P. Johnson, a self-identified drag queen and performer, this organization "protects and defends the human rights of BLACK transgender people. We do this by organizing, advocating, creating an intentional community to heal, developing transformative leadership, and promoting our collective power."

LGBTQ Fund: "Each day, tens of thousands of LGBTQ people are held in jail or immigration detention because they cannot afford bail—for immigration status or charges like sleeping in public. With your help, the Freedom Fund posts bail to secure their release and safety. In tandem, we raise awareness of the epidemic of LGBTQ over-incarceration. We strive towards a critical mass against mass detention."

Transgender Law Center: "Transgender Law Center changes law, policy, and attitudes so that all people can live safely, authentically, and free from discrimination regardless of their gender identity or expression."
