Rick Welts, the president and CEO of the NBA team the Golden State Warriors, married his long-time partner on Jan. 10, media sources reported.

Welts took to Twitter to post news of the joyous occasion, at which which San Francisco Mayor London Breed officiated.

Unlike the majority of pro athletes who are known to be LGBTQ, Welts came out before his career was over. His emergence from the closet has not hampered his career; noted Yahoo News:

A few months after he came out as gay in a New York Times article, Welts was hired by the Warriors as the president and chief operating officer.

"At 11am today in the Mayor's office at SF City Hall, Mayor @LondonBreed married Rick Welts and Todd Gage," Welts announced in his tweet.

"It was a good day, nine years in the making!" the tweet added.

Media sources took note of how Welts' nuptials stood out against the commonplace homophobia of the pro sports world. Reported NBC News:

An openly gay president of an NBA team stands in contrast to what has been the norm in men's major league sports in the U.S.

Warriors coach Steve Kerr responded on Twitter, reposting the wedding photo and adding his own felicitations.

"Congrats Rick and Todd!" Kerr tweeted.
