John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum

The star of "John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum" available now on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray Disc and DVD, has made a career of being in the right place at the right time. Keanu Reeves has successfully willed his way into Hollywood's most audacious franchises. Whether it's racing a non-stop bus full of explosives through LA traffic in "Speed" or saving the future from the tyrannical control of an electronic AI super-race of robots in "The Matrix," the actor has made the most of his roles, especially when handed little to work with.

In the latest installment of the "John Wick" film franchise - and its most lucrative yet (the film made $320 million in global box office) - Reeves returns as the super-assassin, the action picking up right from the climactic end of "Chapter 2." When Wick has successfully taken out a member of the High Table, the international guild part of which Wick himself has served, it isn't long before a mark is placed on John Wick's head — a bounty of $14 million. Now he finds himself with few friends and few options, as Wick crisscrosses the globe.

Reeves leads an all-star cast that includes several heavyweights, some initiated into the franchise for the first time. "Chapter 3" features the return of both Ian McShane and Laurence Fishburne, with Academy Award Winners Anjelica Houston and Halle Berry adding their dramatic pedigree to this intense action flick directed by Chad Stahelski. The fight choreography is high-caliber and the main star of the flick, certainly what has brought this franchise to the attention of its audience. The story is thin and the dialogue is bland, mostly used as a device to set up the next fight scene.

The action is non-stop and most definitely impressive on 4K Ultra HD, which is four times sharper than HD, with far brighter and richer colors, as well as more immersive audio with Dolby ATMOS for a more cinematic experience. From the second that the film begins, the countdown is on and everyone is after John Wick. It leads to several ultra-violent, martial arts melees and gunfights across lower Manhattan. The most impressive among them is when Wick incorporates some help from some four-legged friends and charges off on horseback while being chased by motorcycles.

If violent thrills and highly improbable fight sequences are what you're looking for, then "John Wick: Chapter 3" is right up your dark and dank alley. The film is a lesson in expert editing, and very cool cinematography and is expertly shot with beautifully framed movements, though the lack of character development can be trying. Most of the cast, with Reeves leading the charge, are mostly posing through the picture. There really isn't much meat in the script, which is fight-dominant. After a while, it does begin to feel as if the film itself is on "repeat."

The 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray are packed with special features and a much bonus content that helps to build on the world of "John Wick." Several "in-world" featurettes reveal the secrets of the mysterious assassin ring known as the High Table, as well as the significance of Wick's importance to the developing mythology. The film's remarkable stunt work and fights are explored in multiple behind-the-scenes looks, including the animal training that went into the newest members of this installment's fight club.
